SPANISH
In Spain, it is said, ‘la geografia manda’ (geography always has the last word), and so it would seem, for its historical development has largely been influenced by its dramatic and diverse geography. Iberia, the largest of the three peninsulas in the south-western corner of the Eurasian continent with some 580,000 square kilometres, occupies a unique position at the crossroads between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, Europe and Africa; separated form the rest of Europe by the Pyrenees, a mountain system 440 kilometres long with peaks over 3000 meters above sea-level, and from Africa by the Straits of Gibraltar.
Writing in the early fifth century AD, the historian Orosius observed that ‘by the disposition of the land, Hispania as a whole is a triangle and, surrounded as it is by the Ocean and the Tyrrhenian Sea, is almost an island’.
